Pope Leo XIV warns of dehumanization risk and rejects idea of 'intelligence' in machines
Pope Leo XIV warned international representatives in Paris that technological development, specifically artificial intelligence, creates a risk of dehumanization. Speaking at UNESCO on September 25, 2026, the Pope rejected the idea that machines possess the human faculty of thought. He stated that attributing intelligence to computer systems makes it difficult to recognize the inalienable dignity of people, whose lives are often judged by efficiency and discarded when they are no longer productive. The Pope noted that while artificial intelligence can cross data, it cannot answer questions regarding the meaning of human existence. He also criticized media manipulation, the logic of violence, and the arbitrary will of those in power. He observed that while communication has become faster and information is abundant, this does not equate to truth or wisdom.

Cardinal Kevin Farrell emphasizes pastoral significance of World Youth Day Seoul 2027
Cardinal Kevin Farrell urged organizers and volunteers to focus on the pastoral meaning of World Youth Day 2027 in Seoul, South Korea. Speaking at the second international preparatory meeting held from September 14 to 17 in Seoul and Incheon, the head of the central organizing committee described the gathering as a living expression of the Gospel rather than just an event. Cardinal Farrell stated that the journey toward the 2027 gathering must begin within local dioceses and parishes. He noted that the experience should extend beyond a single week of attendance to become a time for individuals to live and prepare their faith within their families and pastoral communities. The preparatory meeting included approximately 400 participants representing 160 dioceses from more than 100 countries.
