Established as the Apostolic Prefecture of Basankusu 28 July 1926, elevated to apostolic vicariate in 1948 and to a diocese 10 November 1959; it is a suffragan of the Archdiocese of Mbandaka-Bikoro. Its cathedral is the Cathedrale Saints-Pierre-et-Paul in Basankusu.

History
In the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the Diocese of Basankusu (Latin: Basankusuen(sis)) serves as a Latin suffragan within the province of the Metropolitan Mbandaka-Bikoro. Its cathedral, the Cathédrale Saints-Pierre-et-Paul (Saints Peter and Paul), stands in the town of Basankusu.
