Latin-rite diocese in Castile and Leon, Spain, an ancient see restored after the Reconquista around 1100 and formally re-established in 1121. It is a suffragan of the Archdiocese of Valladolid, with its seat at the Cathedral of the Saviour in Avila, the city of St Teresa of Jesus. Bishop Jesus Rico Garcia was appointed on 15 July 2023.

    Pope Leo XIV has designated unaccompanied migrant minors as the focus for the 112th World Day of Migrants and Refugees. Using the theme "Even just one of these little ones," the Pope's message highlights the vulnerability of children within global migration flows. The Diocese of Ávila will hold a Mass for the occasion at 13:00 on Sunday, September 27, at the San Vicente parish. In Burgos, a prayer vigil was scheduled for Wednesday, September 23, at the Salesas church, followed by a meeting of nations on September 26. The Church of Burgos reported that its organizations supporting migrant minors assisted 12,380 people over the last year, with 28.4% being accompanied minors.

  • Fontiveros receives 5,000 pilgrims in the Sanjuanista Jubilee Year

    Fontiveros has welcomed 5,000 pilgrims since December 2025, according to the Diocese of Ávila. The Sanjuanista Jubilee Year marks the third centenary of the canonization of Saint John of the Cross and the first centenary of his proclamation as a Doctor of the Church. More than 4,000 of these visitors arrived as part of organized groups and pilgrimages, while individual visitors increased during the summer months. The Diocese of Ávila and the Junta de Castilla y León supported this turnout through a program to open various temples. This allowed pilgrims to visit the birthplace of Saint John of the Cross and the San Cipriano parish, where the saint was baptized.
