Goan(us) et Damanen(sis)

The Archdiocese of Goa and Daman is a Latin rite metropolitan archdiocese covering Goa, Daman and Diu, and Dadra and Nagar Haveli on India's west coast; erected as the Diocese of Goa on 31 January 1533 and elevated to archdiocese on 4 February 1558, it is the oldest active Latin see of the East Indies. Its seat is the Se Cathedral of St Catherine of Alexandria in Old Goa, and its archbishop also bears the titles Patriarch of the East Indies and Primate of the East. Filipe Neri Cardinal Ferrao has been archbishop since 2003.

History

The Goa state and the Damaon territory, in the Konkan region along the west coast of India, together form the Roman Catholic Metropolitan Archdiocese of Goa and Daman (Latin: Archidioecesis Goanae et Damanensis, Goan Konkani: Gõy ani Damanv Mha-Dhormprant, Portuguese: Arquidiocese de Goa e Damão). One suffragan belongs to the ecclesiastical province of Goa and Damaon: the Sindhudurg Diocese, which comprises the Malvani areas of (central Konkan).
