Latin-rite diocese in Maharashtra, India, established as the Apostolic Vicariate of Poona in 1854 from the Vicariate of Bombay and erected a diocese on 1 September 1886. A suffragan of the Archdiocese of Bombay, its seat is St. Patrick's Cathedral in Pune and it covers the Pune, Satara, Solapur, and Sangli districts plus Kolhapur city, with about 64,200 Catholics (2005).

History

Located in the city of Pune within the ecclesiastical province of the Archdiocese of Mumbai, the Diocese of Poona takes in the civil districts of Pune, Satara, Solapur, and Sangli, together with Kolhapur city. St. Patrick's Church, which still serves as the cathedral, was built in 1850. On March 8, 1854, Poona was separated from Bombay to become a Vicariate Apostolic, and its care was entrusted to the Jesuits.
