History

A see of ancient standing in Italy, Lucca (Latin: Archidioecesis Lucensis) dates as a diocese to at least the 4th century and became an archdiocese in 1726. The archbishop's seat is in the cathedral of S. Martino in Lucca. Though an archdiocese, it is not a metropolitan see, holds no suffragan dioceses, and is exempt, that is, immediately subject to the Holy See (Papacy).

    Archbishop Paolo Giulietti will preside over a concelebrated Mass on October 6 at 6 p.m. in the Lucca Cathedral to conclude his pastoral visit. The Diocese of Lucca has invited all clergy and faithful to attend the service, which coincides with the anniversary of the dedication of the cathedral. The archbishop began this pastoral visit in October 2023 and traveled through the diocese until mid-May to meet with parishioners, priests, pastoral workers, and lay groups. During the visit, he also met with representatives from local authorities and the social and economic sectors. The visit involved thousands of people across the 33 pastoral communities and two city churches established in the diocese since 2020.
