History
The present Diocese of Tlaxcala (Latin: Dioecesis Tlaxcalensis) was erected on 23 May 1959 from territory of the Archdiocese of Puebla de los Ángeles and the adjacent Archdiocese of Mexico. It is a suffragan of Puebla de los Ángeles, a see that itself officially bore the name Diocese of Tlaxcala until 1903: founded in 1519 and so named in 1525, it is the oldest diocese in Mexico. The cathedra of the modern diocese rests in the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Assumption in the see city of Tlaxcala.
