History

Dating from the third century, the Diocese of Pistoia (Latin: Dioecesis Pistoriensis) is a Latin Catholic see located in the Province of Florence and suffragan to the archdiocese of Florence. Between 1653 and 1954 it existed as the diocese of Pistoia and Prato; the Diocese of Prato has stood separate since 1954.

  • Bishop Augusto Mascagna condemns violence against girl in Pescia

    Bishop Augusto Mascagna of Pescia and Pistoia condemned the recent violent attack on a 20-year-old woman in Pescia, stating that the Church must denounce evil and stand with victims. In a note from the Diocese of Pistoia, Mascagna expressed the grief of the diocesan community and offered closeness to the young woman and her family. He stated that no logic of possession or dominance can justify violence, which he described as a grave offense to human dignity. Police arrested a 38-year-old man from the Dominican Republic in connection with the assault, which involved allegations of torture and attempted sexual violence. Investigators report that the woman met the man near the Pescia riverbanks, but the situation escalated after she rejected him. According to police, the man pushed the woman into the water to attempt a controlled drowning to force her compliance. The assault continued on the shore, where the woman was allegedly struck with stones and a belt, and suffered facial burns from cigarettes. A passerby alerted emergency services after hearing the woman's cries for help. Although the suspect fled before police arrived, investigators identified and detained him. He is currently held in the Pistoia prison awaiting judicial proceedings.
