History
Coimbra, Portugal, is home to the Diocese of Coimbra (Latin: Dioecesis Conimbricensis), a Latin Church diocese of the Catholic Church and a suffragan of the Archdiocese of Braga. From 1472 the bishop of Coimbra also held the comital title of Count of Arganil, and was accordingly styled Bishop-Count (Portuguese: Bispo-Conde).

Bishop Virgílio Antunes names leigos and catechists
Bishop Virgílio Antunes appointed lay ministers and sent out catechists during the start of the new pastoral year in the Diocese of Coimbra on September 27, 2026. The appointments and commissions took place during the Feast of the Word at the Sé Nova before the Eucharist. The bishop stated that the diocese operates through pastoral units rather than individual parishes to manage large territories where a single priest or two priests may serve. These units include structures such as pastoral animation teams, pastoral councils, and specific economic funds. Many men and women assumed various lay ministries following a period of formation.

Bishop Virgílio do Nascimento Antunes has appointed 5 priests to new pastoral roles within the Diocese of Coimbra for the 2026-2027 year. According to an announcement from the diocese, Father Maurício Santos Ferreira, also known as Alberto Maria da Cruz Santos Ferreira, will serve as parochial vicar for the Salvitas pastoral units. This assignment covers Lamarosa, Meãs do Campo, São Martinho de Árvore, São Silvestre, Tentúgal, Arazede, Gatões, Liceia, and Seixo de Gatões. The other appointments include Father Filipe José Miranda Diniz as spiritual assistant for the Coimbra diocesan branch of the Associação dos Médicos Católicos Portugueses and the Associação Católica dos Enfermeiros e Profissionais de Saúde. Father Fernando Rodrigues de Carvalho will serve as spiritual assistant for the Instituto Secular da Sagrada Família, while Father Jorge Miguel Santos Carvalho will be the spiritual assistant for the Regia “Cenáculo do Espírito Santo” of the Legião de Maria. Additionally, Father Geraldo Kanjala Mário will serve as chaplain for the Associação Humanitária dos Bombeiros Voluntários de Figueiró dos Vinhos.
