Bishop D. Virgílio Antunes says Diocese of Coimbra is fully programmed in pastoral units
Bishop Virgílio Antunes said the Diocese of Coimbra is now organized around pastoral units rather than individual parishes. Speaking during the Feast of the Word at the Sé Nova, the bishop noted that these units operate with their own structures, including priests, pastoral animation teams, pastoral councils, and economic funds. The bishop stated that while the transition has faced some difficulties, the diocese has moved away from focusing on single parishes. He explained that pastoral units are necessary because a single priest or two priests often cannot cover the vast territories involved. The new pastoral year began with a liturgy where lay ministers were appointed and catechists were sent out following their training. The bishop said the upcoming year aims to deepen knowledge of the Word of God through the creation of groups.
