Erected in 1842 from the Archdiocese of Guatemala and elevated to a metropolitan archdiocese in 1913, it heads the single ecclesiastical province of El Salvador. Its seat is the Metropolitan Cathedral of San Salvador, shrine of St. Oscar Romero.

History
The Salvadoran capital and its surrounding region form the archepiscopal see of this Latin Church archdiocese of the Catholic Church in El Salvador. José Luis Escobar Alas is the current Archbishop of San Salvador, and his cathedra stands in the Metropolitan Cathedral of San Salvador, otherwise the Metropolitan Cathedral of the Holy Saviour (Catedral Metropolitana de San Salvador).
