Ecumenism

Correspondence

What the Popes write, and what is written back.

The Popes write to patriarchs, archbishops, rabbis and imams, and they write back. Here are 140 of those texts, as their authors or the Holy See published them, or as their offices reported them, from 1964 to 2026.

In this chapter
  1. Summary
  2. The Ecumenical Patriarchate
  3. The Moscow Patriarchate
  4. Other Orthodox Churches
  5. The Oriental Orthodox Churches
  6. The Assyrian Church of the East
  7. The Anglican Communion
  8. Lutherans, Methodists, Reformed and Anabaptists

Summary

These are the letters, messages, telegrams, addresses and joint declarations that the Popes, the Holy See’s dicasteries and the heads of other Churches, communities and religions have published to one another, most of them since 2013, with the landmark texts of Paul VI. There are 140 here, 46 of them since the election of Pope Leo XIV, and 21 of them addressed to a Pope. Only texts made public appear; each line quotes the text or the notice of it, and links to it.

Read together they show the shape of the Church’s relations. Rome and the Ecumenical Patriarchate exchange delegations every year for their patronal feasts, Saint Andrew and Saints Peter and Paul. The Holy See greets Muslims every Ramadan, and Buddhists for Vesakh and Hindus for Deepavali. The Coptic Orthodox and Catholic Churches keep a day of friendship on May 10. Condolences and congratulations pass in both directions when a Pope or a patriarch dies or is elected.
