Pope Leo XIV offered 12 pieces of advice to bishops in Latin America and the Caribbean in a letter written to mark the third centenary of the canonization of Saint Toribio de Mogrovejo. The Pope, who previously served as a bishop in Peru, drew inspiration from the life of Saint Toribio, the second archbishop of Lima and patron saint of Latin American bishops.

The Pope encouraged bishops to conduct pastoral visits by traveling personally to meet their communities and listen to their people. He stated that the ministry of a successor to the apostles requires living with a heart focused on heaven while keeping feet on the path. Additionally, he spoke of the school of the cross, noting that the cross reminds a bishop to stay with his flock during difficult times, even when protecting his people comes at a personal cost.
