17 ВЕРЕСНЯ – СВЯТОЇ МУЧЕНИЦІ СОФІЇ І ТРЬОХ ЇЇ ДОЧОК, ВІРИ, НАДІЇ, ЛЮБОВИ.

The Eparchy of Wrocław-Koszalin commemorates the feast of Saint Sophia and her three daughters, Faith, Hope, and Love, on September 17.

According to the Eparchy, Sophia was a Christian widow living in Rome during the reign of Emperor Hadrian. Her daughters lived a life of prayer and scripture reading alongside their daily work.

During the persecutions of Christians in 137, a Roman official named Antioch ordered Sophia and her daughters to offer sacrifices to idols. The family refused, stating they worship only the one true God. After being brought before the emperor, the girls rejected his promises to renounce Christ, expressing a willingness to endure torture and death for their faith. Despite attempts by a noblewoman named Palladia to persuade them otherwise, the family remained steadfast.

The daughters were eventually subjected to torture and died. Sophia buried her daughters and spent three days praying at their graves before she also died.
