The Sanctuary of Our Lady of La Salette commemorates the 180th anniversary of the Marian apparition that occurred in 1846. On September 19, 1846, two young shepherds, Maximin Giraud and Mélanie Calvat, reported seeing a weeping woman while tending livestock near La Salette-Fallavaux.

The children described seeing an intense light followed by a woman sitting with her face in her hands. According to the accounts examined by Church authorities, the woman delivered a message focused on conversion, prayer, and penance. The message specifically addressed the profanation of Sunday and the irreverent use of the name of God.

The Bishop of Grenoble, Philibert de Bruillard, recognized the apparition five years after the event following a canonical investigation. The sanctuary is located at an altitude of approximately 1,800 meters in the Isère department of France.
