The Archdiocese of Naxos, Andros, Tinos, and Mykonos observes the feast of Saint Matthew the Apostle and Evangelist on September 21.

Matthew was a disciple of Jesus Christ and the author of the Gospel of Matthew. Originally from Capernaum, he worked as a tax collector known as Levi before following Jesus. His name means "Gift of God," and some believe his name change from Levi to Matthew symbolized his conversion and new life.

The Gospel of Matthew was written to address Christians of Jewish descent, presenting the teachings of Jesus as the fulfillment of the Mosaic Law. To demonstrate this connection, the text links the actions and words of Jesus to references in the Old Testament. Unlike the other Gospels, Matthew's text was not written in Greek but in a Hebrew language.
