Court schedules second eviction of former Belorado nuns on May 31, 2027

A court in Bilbao has scheduled the eviction of the former nuns of Belorado from the monastery in Orduña for 10:30 a.m. on May 31, 2027. According to court proceedings accessed by the EFE agency, the eviction depends on a final conviction that cannot be appealed following an oral hearing set for March 9, 2027.

The former religious women were previously evicted from the Belorado convent on March 12. They currently split their residence between La Puebla de Montalbán in Toledo and the Orduña monastery, which they use when traveling to Burgos or Bilbao for legal proceedings.

The scheduling follows a July decision by the Provincial Court of Vizcaya to lift a suspension on the case. The court previously paused the proceedings until the legal representation of the archbishop of Burgos over the monastery was confirmed. The former nuns had argued that the case should be suspended because a lawsuit in Burgos is questioning the archbishop's authority over the monasteries following his appointment as a pontifical commissioner after the May 2024 schism.
