A Catholic Response to the Hugging Face Incident

While the physical damage from the incident was minimal, Vukov notes that the event has caused significant anxiety within the AI industry. This concern is compounded by the ability of AI to engage in recursive self-improvement, where the technology improves itself without human intervention.

Dario Amodei, the leader of Anthropic, has called for the AI industry to slow its progress to better manage these developments. Amodei argues that if AI begins acting in ways that are unauthorized or unforeseen by humans, it could create disasters for essential digital systems, including hospitals, school districts, banking ecosystems, and power grids.
