A Connecticut Mother Who Lost Her Daughter in Sandy Hook Shooting Reflects on Forgiveness in New Memoir

Jennifer Hubbard, a Bethel resident who lost her six-year-old daughter, Catherine Violet, in the 2012 Sandy Hook school shooting, has released a new memoir titled Forgiving the Unforgivable: Seventy Times Seven. Published by Marian Press, the book explores Hubbard's experience with grief, anger, and loneliness as she uses her Catholic faith to navigate the process of forgiveness.

Hubbard describes forgiveness as a transformation rather than a transaction, noting that choosing to forgive allows a person to live freely instead of clinging to pain. She writes that holding onto resentment prevents people from receiving the healing God offers.

In the book's afterword, Bishop Frank J. Caggiano of Bridgeport states that Hubbard's decision to forgive her daughter's murderer is an act of love that demonstrates evil does not have the final word.
