A never-before-seen Titian comes home to Milan
The Museo Poldi Pezzoli is hosting an exhibition titled “Un Tiziano per Milano” featuring a painting by Titian that has never been shown to the public. The work, a Madonna with Child and Saint Mary Magdalene dated to approximately 1540–1550, is on long-term loan from a private collector.
The exhibition runs until January 25, 2027. Curators Enrico Maria Dal Pozzolo and Lavinia Galli organized the small collection of works to mark the 450th anniversary of the painter's death and to examine Titian's connection to Milan.
The painting left Milan in 1744 after Sir Thomas Saunders Sebright V, an English traveler, purchased it from a Milanese palace. Close examination of the piece shows that two different hands contributed to the work, including the refined features of the Virgin's face.
