Marco Bernardoni has responded to criticisms from Antonio Staglianò, president of the Pontifical Academy of Theology, regarding Bernardoni's book, Jesus and Christ. Bernardoni addressed Staglianò's recent articles, which labeled Bernardoni's work as ateology.

Bernardoni argued that Staglianò's use of the term ateology is ambiguous and inaccurate. He stated that he is not an atheist but believes spiritual experience is the highest purpose of existence. Bernardoni claimed that labeling his work as ateology because it does not conform to Christian theology demonstrates intellectual intolerance and a narrow view of research. He described this approach as a form of semantic policing that excludes any thought not aligned with official doctrine from being called theology. Additionally, Bernardoni rejected several accusations made against him, including charges of rationalism, positivism, docetism, gnosticism, and pelagianism.
