A Victorian woman in command of her life and land

Lesley Whiteside has published a book titled A Miserable Thing to Be a Woman, which examines the life of Mary-Anne Tyrrell (1821–94) and her landed estate.

The book, released by Four Courts Press, details the experiences of Tyrrell, a Victorian woman who managed her own life and property. Matt Dempsey of The Irish Catholic notes that the work explores Tyrrell's history in the Carbury area near Grange Castle, Edenderry.
