AI Cannot Answer Humanity’s Questions on Suffering, Tanzanian Catholic Priest at Launch of New Book

Fr. Melchior Marandu argued that artificial intelligence cannot resolve deep human questions regarding sickness, death, and the meaning of suffering. The Tanzanian Jesuit priest made these remarks on September 12 during the launch of his new book, "A Theology of Suffering: Quest for Meaning," at the Ukarimu Retreat Centre Chapel in Kenya’s Nakuru Catholic Diocese.

Fr. Marandu stated that while technology and science continue to advance, they cannot eliminate death or suffering. He noted that although AI can be developed to answer questions within specific communities, it lacks the capacity to address fundamental human struggles.

The priest suggested that suffering should prompt an examination of human responsibility instead of placing all blame on God. He challenged Christians to consider why even people perceived as good or holy can cause pain to others within their communities.
