AMECEA Staff Trained on Kenyan Laws

Staff at the Association of Member Episcopal Conferences in Eastern Africa (AMECEA) secretariat attended a training session on September 24 to learn about legal compliance in Kenya. The training helped the secretariat and its departments understand the legal framework governing employment and identify areas of risk to strengthen internal systems.

Fred Olweny, the program manager at the Christian Organizations Research and Advisory Trust (CORAT) Africa, told participants that being a Church institution does not exempt an organization from the laws of the country where it operates. He explained that while the Church maintains authority over doctrine and ordination, matters such as pay, procedure, and protection from unfair treatment apply to every worker.

Olweny stated that Church leaders must balance pastoral duties with strict legal compliance because the Kenyan Constitution guarantees fair practices to every worker. He noted that leaders carry a dual mandate to govern internal religious affairs while meeting statutory employment law.
