Archbishop Eamon: Church doesn’t have technical answers to AI, but offers ethical principles

Archbishop Eamon Martin said the Church does not claim to have technical answers to the questions raised by artificial intelligence, but instead offers ethical principles to guide the conversation. Speaking at the Living Magnifica Humanitas conference at Saint Patrick’s College in Maynooth, Martin noted that the Church seeks to focus on human dignity, conscience, responsibility, and the common good.

The conference addressed the opportunities and challenges of AI, following the publication of Pope Leo XIV’s encyclical, Magnifica Humanitas: On the Protection of the Human Person in the Age of Artificial Intelligence. Martin reflected on the Pope's invitation to consider how AI development affects human dignity and the type of society being built. He also asked participants to consider who holds the power in current AI discussions and which voices are being excluded.
