Auxiliary Bishop of Saigon: “We stand alongside migrants and families, bringing the Gospel to the complexities of the metropolis”

Auxiliary Bishop John Baptist Nguyen Quang Tuyen said the Catholic Church in Ho Chi Minh City is working to support migrants and families living in the rapidly changing metropolis. Bishop Nguyen Quang Tuyen told Fides that the city attracts millions of people from across Vietnam who arrive to study or find work.

The bishop estimated the city has a population of about 8 million residents, plus approximately 7 million people who have moved there temporarily or permanently. To prevent those arriving from other provinces from being marginalized, the Church organizes monthly meetings for migrants. Bishop Nguyen Quang Tuyen noted that many young people arrive alone and rely on local parish communities for connection and support.
