Bishop Gyamfi urges West African youth to reject abortion

Bishop Mathew Kwafi Gyamfi urged Catholic youth across West Africa to reject abortion and protect the dignity of every unborn child. Speaking during the opening Mass of the first West African Youth Day in Accra, Ghana, on September 8, the President of the Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference told young people to ensure every conceived child is given the opportunity to be born.

Bishop Gyamfi, who serves as the bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Sunyani, used the feast of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary to remind attendees that human life has a purpose. He stated that every pregnancy should result in a birthday because children are part of a divine plan rather than accidents. He argued that the circumstances surrounding a pregnancy should not determine if an unborn child lives.

The bishop cited the example of Mary to encourage young people, noting that she faced potential social ridicule, accusations of infidelity, and even death after becoming pregnant. He said Mary did not choose abortion for her own comfort or selfish interests despite these risks.
