Bishop Robert P. Boxie III attributes scarcity of African American bishops to racism

Bishop Robert P. Boxie III, the auxiliary bishop of Washington, attributed the scarcity of African American bishops in the United States to racism. During an interview, Boxie stated that racism is the direct reason for the lack of Black bishops in the American hierarchy.

Boxie, who is the youngest bishop in the United States, argued that increasing the number of Black bishops is necessary to represent the African American community. He suggested that only an African American bishop can effectively defend the interests of Black Catholics.
