Bishop Rotich recalls Cardinal Otunga's simplicity

Bishop Alfred Kipkoech Arap Rotich of the Catholic Diocese of Kericho called on the faithful to rekindle the prophetic witness of Cardinal Michael Maurice Otunga during a Mass held on September 5. The Eucharistic celebration took place at the Resurrection Garden in the Archdiocese of Nairobi, where the Servant of God is buried, to mark the 23rd anniversary of the Cardinal's death.

Bishop Rotich, who described the late Cardinal as a personal mentor during his own time in the episcopacy, highlighted Otunga's humility and simplicity. He shared a personal account of the Cardinal refusing to let a priest polish his shoes because he did not want to treat his priests like servants. Bishop Rotich urged the community to move beyond polite eulogies and instead ignite the same prophetic fire demonstrated by the first native Kenyan bishop and cardinal.
