Bishops of England and Wales condemn 'flawed and dangerous' assisted dying bill

Catholic bishops in England and Wales have condemned a proposed assisted suicide bill, describing it as flawed and dangerous. The bishops warned that the legislation does not protect vulnerable people as the UK House of Commons prepares to resume debates on the matter.

The bill, which was proposed by Lauren Edwards on June 17, is scheduled for examination by the House of Commons on September 11. A similar text was previously rejected in April 2026.

The Archbishop of Westminster urged parliamentarians to reject the proposal, calling it a wrong and incomplete law. Other members of the Catholic episcopate stated that the sanctity of human life must be defended.
