Bishops raise the alarm: Ghana is becoming a cocaine hub:

Ghanaian bishops warned that the country is becoming a hub for cocaine trafficking and drug consumption following the seizure of 3.9 tonnes of the drug in France. French customs authorities intercepted the shipment, valued at approximately €225 million, hidden inside a container of plastic waste arriving at the port of Dunkirk from Ghana on September 10.

Bishop Matthew Kwasi Gyamfi, the Bishop of Sunyani and President of the Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference, signed a statement noting that Ghana's location and role in international trade require increased vigilance at ports, airports, and borders. The bishops stated that drug trafficking is not only a transit issue but has led to domestic drug abuse among young people and the corruption of institutions. They expressed concern that drug money affects commerce, security services, and members of the Church.

The bishops asked authorities to increase efforts against trafficking and to support those struggling with addiction. They also called on Catholic parishes, schools, and youth organizations to increase drug-prevention education, mentorship, and pastoral support, noting that the government cannot fight this issue alone.
