Bp Artur Ważny speaks to PAP

Bishop Artur Ważny told the Polish Press Agency that he sometimes fears how Jesus perceives the homilies delivered from pulpits. In an interview, the bishop discussed the role of catechists and the image of God being presented to the faithful.

His comments follow a general decree from the Polish Conference of Bishops regarding the requirements for those seeking permanent ministry as catechists. Ważny explained that a catechist is a man or woman whom the Church establishes for the permanent ministry of proclaiming and passing on the faith after a period of discernment and preparation. He noted that while the formal recognition of this role is new, the ministry itself is as old as the Church.

According to Ważny, catechists are responsible for ensuring faith extends beyond school lessons or Sunday sermons. Their duties include helping people prepare for sacraments, leading catechesis for adults and families, supporting parish groups, and reaching out to those who have left the Church or are searching for a place within it. He also stated that catechists should support people during significant life moments such as illness, grief, or crises of faith. He said the decree aims to define these responsibilities rather than increase the number of functions.
