Brazil's president calls for ordination of women as priests, bishops (EWTN News)

Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva called for the Catholic Church to end priestly celibacy and allow women to be ordained as priests and bishops. During a September 16 meeting with members of an evangelical organization, the president suggested the Church would face difficulties unless it permits women to hold these roles and speak within the institution.

Bishop Devair Araújo da Fonseca of Piracicaba responded to these comments during a homily. The bishop stated that politicians are attempting to dictate Church actions and should instead focus on governing the country, which he described as a poor job.
