Brooklyn College Catholics Hope Revived Center Will Keep Growing
The Newman Center at Brooklyn College is undergoing a revival to attract more students to the Catholic campus organization, according to campus minister Kayla DeWitt. Located at 2401 Glenwood Road in Flatbush, the center serves as a space for students to share their faith and fellowship.
The center currently averages about 20 students per week. To support student life, the center offers Mass on Tuesdays and Thursdays, Bible study on Mondays, and remains open most days for prayer and contemplation. The center also plans social events, such as an All Saints Day gathering in November.
While Brooklyn College has hosted a Newman Center for many years, DeWitt and other leaders noted that the organization had recently become too secularized, moving away from its core mission. The center is named after St. John Henry Newman, a British theologian and philosopher.
