European bishops are opposing proposals that would force the Church to delete baptismal records from its registers. The Commission of the Bishops' Conferences of the European Union warned that removing the names of those who received the Sacrament of Baptism could violate religious freedom and the Church's right to self-governance.

The bishops stated that baptismal registers are not merely membership lists. Instead, they serve as essential historical and legal documents for the internal life of the Church.
