Cardinal Steiner highlights the importance of voting and political participation in elections

Cardinal Steiner urged voters to participate in upcoming elections and pay close attention to candidate proposals for both executive and legislative offices. Speaking as the Cardinal of the Amazon, he emphasized the need to combat misinformation and fake news as the voting period approaches.

Steiner noted that political involvement serves the common good, fraternity, and justice by aiding the most vulnerable and marginalized members of society. He referenced Pope Francis, who described politics as a high form of charity, a concept shared by Saint Paul VI and Benedict XVI.

The cardinal warned against the practice of buying votes and highlighted the significant power of the legislative branch. He explained that while the executive branch holds authority, the legislature creates and approves the laws that impact society. To illustrate this, Steiner cited the environmental licensing bill (PL 2.159/2021) and the constitutional amendment known as the "Blindagem" or "Prerogatives" amendment (PEC 3/2021), which sought to expand immunity for deputies and senators against criminal investigations.
