Cardenal Castillo delivers homily on XXV Sunday of Ordinary Time

Cardinal Carlos Castillo, the archbishop of Lima, urged the faithful to reject competition and envy during his homily for the 25th Sunday in Ordinary Time. Speaking on the parable of the workers in the vineyard, Castillo said the Gospel calls people to recognize the value of others and build relationships based on brotherhood, care, and equality.

The archbishop noted that the tendency to feel superior for being first or arriving before others affects both society and the Church. He explained that different roles and tasks are meant to be complementary and that no one holds a privileged position before God. Castillo observed that these challenges existed in early Christian communities and continue in modern pastoral life. He gave examples of long-standing liturgical ministers or catechists potentially looking down on newcomers who lack experience.

Castillo also stated that the Kingdom of Heaven is reflected in earthly history rather than being entirely separate from it. He suggested that the Gospel allows people to find signs and gestures of the divine within human history.
