Cardinal Tagle chosen as new Dean of College of Cardinals

Catholic IntelligenceUpdated 1 min read

Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle has been elected Dean of the College of Cardinals, succeeding 92-year-old Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re. The cardinal-bishops elect the Dean, who coordinates the activities of the College of Cardinals but holds no hierarchical governing authority over them.

If he is under the age of 80, Tagle's primary duty will be to convene and preside over a papal conclave. Under rules established by Pope Francis in 2019, the Dean serves a five-year term with the possibility of one re-election, replacing the previous practice of serving for life.
