Cartas del padre Pedro (LII): Ética y Política (27-9-2026)

Bishop Pedro Aguado Cuesta of Huesca and Jaca addressed the relationship between ethics and politics in his latest letter. He noted that while the topic is difficult, current realities require people to consider how these two dimensions interact.

Aguado Cuesta used definitions from artificial intelligence to distinguish the two concepts. He explained that ethics involves studying human conduct to define right and wrong, while politics involves group decision-making, managing power, and organizing social life to promote the common good. He stated that ethics focuses on what people ought to do, whereas politics reflects what people actually do.

The bishop argued that these dimensions are inseparable and that society fails when they are separated. He cited corruption in political management and crimes or errors committed within the Church as examples of the consequences that occur when ethics and politics are disconnected.
