Catholic Bishop in Mauritius Calls for Action Against Isolation, Rejection of Migrants and Refugees

Bishop Jean Michaël Durhône of the Diocese of Port-Louis called for concrete action to address the isolation, rejection, and discrimination faced by migrants and refugees in Mauritius. During a Mass for the 112th World Day of Migrants and Refugees on Sunday, September 27, he urged the Church and society to improve how they welcome, protect, and integrate people seeking better lives.

Bishop Durhône noted that Mauritius was shaped by successive generations of migrants from Europe, Africa, India, China, and Asia who arrived under difficult circumstances. He suggested that this history should encourage Mauritians to listen, discern, and take care of migrant workers, foreign students, and refugees.

The bishop stated that while many migrants contribute to the economic and social development of the country, some still encounter incomprehension and hardship. He explained that responding to the call to work in God's vineyard requires people to first listen to the experiences of others and understand their specific circumstances.
