Catholic Bishop Warns Against Normalization of Alcohol and Drug Abuse in Mozambique

Bishop António Manuel Bogaio Constantino of the Diocese of Caia warned that the normalization of alcohol and drug abuse is causing family suffering and threatening the future of Mozambique. During a Mass at Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish in the Archdiocese of Beira on September 26, the Apostolic Administrator of Beira challenged society to stop treating substance abuse as an insignificant issue.

Bishop Bogaio said alcohol and drugs are undermining the lives of young people and creating tension within marriages and relationships. He noted that young couples are struggling to understand one another due to these substances. The bishop also questioned the habit of drinking alcohol on multiple days of the week, such as Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays, and urged Christians to examine their habits and their consequences.
