Catholic Bishops in Nigeria Conclude Plenary Assembly with Call for Renewed Politics Rooted in Moral Principles

Catholic bishops in Nigeria called for a new style of politics based on moral principles, justice, and responsible governance at the conclusion of their second plenary assembly. In a statement issued following the meeting held from September 10 to 18 at the Our Lady and St. Kizito Pastoral Centre in the Diocese of Osogbo, the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria urged political leaders and citizens to prioritize the common good and respect human dignity.

The bishops linked the protection of human life and religious liberty to the pursuit of social justice, citing Catholic Social Teaching and the document Dignitatis Humanae. They described human dignity as an unconditional and inviolable gift because every person is created in the image and likeness of God.

The conference members also commended Pope Leo XIV for his recent encyclical, Magnifica Humanitas. The bishops encouraged Nigerians to study the document, stating that it strengthens Church teachings regarding the protection and dignity of every person.
