Catholic candidates to shape 2026 gubernatorial races in 12 states

Catholic candidates are running for governor in 12 U.S. states during the 2026 election cycle. At least 14 candidates from both major parties have publicly identified as Catholic. If all Catholic candidates win their respective elections, the number of Catholic governors in the United States would increase from 20 to 22.

In Texas and Massachusetts, both major-party nominees are Catholic. In Massachusetts, Democratic Governor Maura Healey faces Republican Michael Minogue. In Texas, Republican Governor Greg Abbott faces Democrat Gina Hinojosa.

Governor Greg Abbott told EWTN News that his Catholic faith informs his decisions, particularly regarding the protection of life, abortion, euthanasia, justice for victims, and the dignity of workers. Approximately half of the 36 gubernatorial contests this year are open races where the current governor is retiring or is term-limited.
