Catholic catechists explore AI tools while stressing human role in faith formation in Thailand

Catholic catechists from the Diocese of Surat Thani met for a seminar on artificial intelligence and catechesis from Sept. 17 to 19. The three-day event at the Pastoral Center in Surat Thani included 38 participants, such as lay educators and religious sisters, who received training on using AI tools for ministry.

Father Yuttakarn Kobwattanakun, head of the diocese's Catechetical Department, said the training helps catechists prepare lesson outlines, create study materials, and analyze verified Church texts to answer difficult doctrinal questions. He noted that technology can enrich teaching as long as it does not compromise core beliefs.

Father Yuttakarn also stated that Church teaching should provide the framework for how people create and use artificial intelligence. The seminar combined practical technology training with discussions on ethical discernment and doctrinal accuracy.
