The Diocese of Jaffna held a funeral Mass for Father Antony Fernando Benet at St. Mary's Cathedral on Friday, September 25. Bishop Anran Ranjith presided over the service following a period of lying in state at the Bishop's House chapel.

Thousands of people, including Mannar Bishop Anthony Pillai Gnanasigaram, priests, religious members, and relatives from the Jaffna and Mannar dioceses, attended the funeral. After the Mass, Father Benet was buried at the St. Konjesthi Mother Rehabilitation courtyard. His body had been brought from Canada for the services.

Father Benet was ordained a priest in 1989. His ministry included serving as assistant priest in Mayilittivu, Ilvalai, and Paranthan, and as parish priest in Karavetti, Manippai, Kilinochchi, Paruthithurai, and Paranthan. He also served as the director of the German Tamil Catholic Spiritual Ministry, the diocesan director of the catechetical center, and the dean of the Kilinochchi and Paruthithurai deaneries. Additionally, he worked at the Vavuniya Chettikulam displaced persons camp.
