The Court of Justice of the European Union is considering a case that could affect how the Church manages baptismal records and personal data. The case, C-12/25, involves the Diocese of Ghent in Belgium and examines whether individuals can demand the complete removal of baptismal entries from both physical and digital registers.

The request seeks to erase entire paragraphs containing details such as the date, location, and names of parents and godparents. This legal challenge pits the right to personal data protection and the freedom to leave the Church against the institutional autonomy and religious freedom of the Church.

The Commission of the Bishops' Conferences of the European Union (COMECE) published a study on the matter titled Erasure from baptismal registers on September 2. While requests for such erasures are rare, the issue prompted the Pontifical Council for Legislative Texts to intervene on April 17, 2015. A decision from the European Court is expected on October 1.
