Catholic Schools Maitland-Newcastle plans for a sustainable future

Catholic Schools Maitland-Newcastle is changing how it distributes resources across its 58 schools to support nearly 22,000 students and ensure long-term financial stability. The organization stated that these adjustments respond to rising staff wages and school operating costs, which have increased while government funding has remained stagnant. At the end of 2025, the system recorded an operating deficit of approximately $17.4 million, with wages now making up about 95 percent of grant income.

The organization intends to use these changes to align staffing and resources with educational priorities, specifically to improve literacy, numeracy, curriculum implementation, and teacher capability. While the changes are driven by financial necessity, the organization said the primary purpose is to improve education. This includes modifying teacher librarian roles, though school libraries will remain active learning environments for students.
