Catholics in DR Congo Cautioned Against Succumbing to “temptation of worldliness”

Bishop Melchisedec Sikuli Paluku of the Butembo-Beni Diocese in the Democratic Republic of the Congo cautioned Catholics against adopting worldly lifestyles during a homily on September 26. Speaking at the opening of the 2026–2027 canonical year at St. Luke’s Inter-Novitiate, the bishop urged Christians to maintain religious values through their conduct and appearance.

Bishop Paluku specifically addressed the use of artificial beauty accessories and revealing clothing. He expressed concern regarding the increasing use of expensive wigs among women and young girls, suggesting the practice reflects a desire to imitate white people. He described the use of wigs as an insult to God and noted that the high cost of these products can lead people to prioritize beauty over essential needs, such as a mother choosing a wig over her child's education.

The bishop also spoke against clothing styles that expose much of the body. He noted a tendency, particularly among women, to dress minimally and urged the faithful to consider how their physical appearance reflects their religious commitment.
