CBCP backs ‘Dapat Isa Lang’ initiative for anti-dynasty law

The Catholic Bishops' Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) expressed support for the "Dapat Isa Lang" initiative to promote an anti-dynasty law.

In a statement released September 25, 2026, the CBCP argued that political power should not become a family inheritance. The bishops noted that while many members of political families serve with integrity, the current system allows power to concentrate among the same families. This concentration narrows opportunities for other qualified citizens, weakens political competition, and makes accountability more difficult.

The CBCP cited Section 26, Article II of the 1987 Constitution, which mandates that the State guarantee equal access to public service and prohibit political dynasties as defined by law. The bishops stated that this constitutional mandate remains unfulfilled nearly four decades after the constitution was adopted. They maintained that political leadership must remain open to all Filipinos who possess the competence and desire to serve.
