CEI restores artworks in Assisi
The Italian Episcopal Conference (CEI) is funding the restoration of several artworks in Assisi to preserve Franciscan artistic heritage.
At the Sacro Convento di San Francesco, the CEI is supporting a project to restore the 1753 painting “Estasi di san Giuseppe da Copertino” by Andrea Benedetto Fornioni. The painting depicts the levitation of the “Santo dei voli” before the Madonna della Concezione and is currently in a state of conservation that compromises its legibility. Sergio Fusetti will lead the work, which includes cleaning, consolidation, lining, and pictorial reintegration.
The CEI is also funding work on three pieces from the Museo della Porziuncola in Santa Maria degli Angeli for the exhibition “San Francesco alla Porziuncola, la parabola del volto di San Francesco d’Assisi.” These works include the paintings “San Francesco in meditazione” and “San Francesco adora il crocifisso,” and a painted paper print of “L’albero serafico.” For the paintings, the work involves cleaning, filling, reintegration, and frame maintenance, while the print requires the removal of plexiglass and the revision of areas affected by insect abrasions.
